Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro’s Trekking Best Seasons

The prime trekking seasons on Mount Kilimanjaro align with its two dry seasons, typically from January to mid-March and June to October. Although these periods are termed “dry seasons,” the weather can still be unpredictable, with occasional rain. Trekking during the rainy season is possible, but it comes with a higher likelihood of rain and thick cloud cover over the summits of Kibo and Mawenzi. Consequently, some trekking agencies suspend operations in November and December, deeming the conditions too challenging and the experience less rewarding. Interestingly, despite the imperfect weather, Christmas and New Year remain the most popular times for climbing Kilimanjaro.

Which is the Best Season on Kilimanjaro?
The January-to-March Trekking Season

The January to March season tends to be slightly colder, with a greater chance of encountering snow on the paths. However, the days are often clearer, with only occasional brief showers. This season is exceptionally beautiful for climbing and is typically quieter than the June to October peak season. This period coincides with the main academic holidays in Europe and the West, resulting in higher visitor numbers. During this time, clouds tend to linger around the tree-line after the heavy rains of March to May. However, above this altitude, the skies are usually clear and blue, with minimal chance of precipitation.

The June-to-October Trekking Season

The June to October season is busier, which can be advantageous. Higher visitor numbers increase your chances of finding trekking companions, which can be beneficial for both companionship and cost-sharing. For those seeking solitude, it is still possible to find peace on the mountain during this peak season. The trails are long, and you can often find vast gaps between trekkers, allowing you to walk in peace. Some routes, like Rongai or the trails across the Shira Plateau, rarely have more than one or two trekking groups at a time and are often completely deserted. Moreover, Kilimanjaro’s vastness can make other trekkers almost unnoticeable if you prefer solitude.
